The Riviera Maya offers several transportation options, and depending on your travel style, some are more convenient than others. Here, I’ll walk you through the most common options and share my personal recommendations so your trip is relaxed, worry-free, and you can choose the option that works best for you.

Transportation Options
ADO Bus
The ADO bus is an economical and reliable way of transportation from Cancún to other destinations like Playa del Carmen or Tulum. I’ve taken it both alone and with friends, and find it comfortable.
Where to catch the bus in Cancún:
Cancún Airport:
Perfect if you’re flying in and want a direct ride.
Travel time to Tulum: ~2.5 hours.
Average price: $24 USD per person.
Departures every 1–2 hours, 12 pm to 8 pm.
Cancún Central Bus Terminal:
Best if you’re already in town.
Average price: $15 USD per person.
Departures every 1–2 hours, 5 am to 11 pm.
Getting there: by Uber or DiDi (not allowed from airport).
👉 In short: If you’re already in Cancún, the central terminal is usually more convenient. If you’re coming straight from the airport to Tulum, take the bus from there.
Private Transfer
If you want to travel without stress and in total comfort, a private transfer can be an excellent option, especially if you’re traveling with family or a group. Unlike the bus, you don’t have to worry about rushing to catch a departure, calling an Uber/DiDi to the terminal, or carrying your luggage from one place to another. The driver picks you up directly at your hotel (or at the airport if you just arrived) and takes you to your destination without any unnecessary stops.
The best part is that you travel at your own pace: you choose the time that works best for you, no one has to drive or worry about parking, and everyone can relax along the way. Plus, if you’re traveling with several people, the cost per group often ends up being similar (or even cheaper) than taking the bus, since the price is per van, not per person.

Rental Car

Prices: Daily rental averages $34–$55 USD, depending on the type of car. Also, consider the insurance cost, which usually ranges from $12–$28 USD per day depending on whether it’s basic or full coverage.
Agencies: At Cancún Airport, you’ll find several car rental agencies. Their counters are right in the arrivals area, after baggage claim. You can book online in advance (often cheaper) or compare options when you arrive.
Requirements & Age (may vary by agency):
Valid driver’s license (international or from your country if it’s in English or Spanish).
Credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit.
Minimum age: Most agencies rent from 18 years old, but drivers 18–24 usually pay an extra daily fee. From 25 onwards, rates are usually lower.
Safety tips: Driving in Cancún and the Riviera Maya is relatively easy and safe, but it’s always good to take precautions. The maximum speed on the highway is 100 km/h; these roads aren’t designed for higher speeds, so it’s important to drive responsibly and watch out for other drivers, as many exceed the limits. Also, pay attention when driving at night, especially on secondary roads where some stretches have no lighting or animals crossing.
